Project Ciidna

Project Ciidna is an ongoing project that highlights my cultural heritage and documents my familial bond.  The concept for this work has started with my dislike of how the media has portrayed people who share a similar background as me. More precisely, I have witnessed the blatantly negative and harmful representations, stereotypes, and biases all around the world.

As part of the African diaspora, growing up here came with it’s challenges. On top of that, I would also come in contact with all manners of racism and discrimination: I experienced a variety of negative portrayals and harsh words of disdain towards the African diaspora. These experiences throughout my childhood and the majority of my adolescence have not only set me back, but also limited me in many ways.

As a result of that, I have created  “Project Ciidna” in which I capture and display the beauty as well as the elegance of my culture and heritage. I hope to show the future generation of people sharing similar experiences as me, that we are much more than the narratives that are forced upon us.

In essence, this series challenges the negative and harmful depiction of the African diaspora.
